Sucker Punch has had some bad reviews. Questions over its sexual politics, its lack of soul, and its excessive CGI have led to in its current rating of 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. But surely these criticisms miss the point. Sucker Punch is trash, and it knows it.

Disney’s 50th animated feature, Tangled could be the definition of mediocrity. It’s not that it’s a bad film - it’s a fairly amusing take on the Rapunzel story with a few nice scenes (the lanterns, the prison break) and some funny characters (the horse and the chameleon) - it’s just underwhelming and forgettable. The sub-Broadway musical numbers are perfectly acceptable but unmemorable, the animation is quite nice but would have looked better hand-drawn, and the lead characters are a bit bland.

I have to stress there are much worse 3D animations released nearly every week now, and in that respect Tangled measures as a success, but against Disney’s previous 49 films (most of them classics) Tangled feels lacking in inspiration.

2008’s Outlander is the best b-movie featuring Vikings fighting aliens I’ve seen. It’s a bit silly, as the concept would suggest, but it’s cliché filled plot and characterisations are relatively fun. Jim Caviezel is an outsider who stumbles across a Viking village (after crashing his spaceship) and initially strikes up a rivalry with Jack Huston’s alpha-male Viking - which ultimately becomes a friendship - as they battle an alien that had followed Caviezel there.

I felt like I’d seen it all before, and knew exactly where it was going, but as 2 hours of dumb entertainment it was perfectly sufficient. I’m now looking forward to seeing how Daniel Craig fares in the similarly themed Cowboys & Aliens.

Continuing my renewed Coen brothers obsession following True Grit, I rewatched No Country for Old Men and was even more impressed with it than I had been on the previous two viewings.

Since the last time I watched it I’ve started to read some Cormac McCarthy which has enhanced my appreciation of the film. The dialogue takes on the same rhythm and composition as McCarthy’s writing but is performed with the kind of deadpan humour that the Coen brothers ae renowned for. Interestingly True Grit takes a similar stance. With much of its dialogue reportedly taken straight from the original novel - which is poetic and of a time and place - the lively performances inject a sense of humour that I don’t beleive would be conveyed in text.

Like the McCarthy novels I’ve read (All The Pretty Horses and The Crossing), No Country evokes nostalgia in the viewer/reader for the time and place of its setting, yet the characters within in the narrative - best embodied by Tommy Lee Jones’ ageing Sheriff - yearn for another (earlier and simpler) time and place - one that is preserved by their own nostalgia and mythologizing.

This is another place where True Grit fits in - evoking the western myth but putting a harsher twist on it. The Coens’ west is a cold, violent and dirty place. This place feels more believable than the west of John Ford or Howard Hawks but is ultimately less romantic. Despite this, True Grit has rekindled audiences’ love for the western - its huge american box ofice success is testiment to that - and perhaps its success is derived from toning down those romantic elements of old, and presenting and more complex, relevant west, one which isn’t all that different from the 1980s ‘west’ of No Country For Old Men.

The Coen brothers’ True Grit isn’t a stunning reinvention of the western or a serious contender for the best picture Oscar it’s nominated for - what it is though is a thoroughly entertaining, straight forward film full of great characters, witty dialogue and exciting action.

Exactly the same could be said of the 1969 John Wayne version - and this remake follows the story and key scenes very closely - what this has over the original though is great acting and stunning cinematography from Roger Deakins (who receives his 9th Oscar nomination for this despite never winning). John Wayne has magnificent screen presence but was never the greatest actor, and in the original Glen Campbell and Kim Darby were frankly annoying. The trio here though, of Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld put in great performances, all complimenting each other and acting out their unlikely relationship with subtle affection. 14 year old Steinfeld in particular gives a masterful performance, outshining the experienced talents of Bridges and Damon.

It’s not as original, or full of as much depth as previous Coen brothers efforts but True Grit is hard to fault as pure, thrilling entertainment.

I’ve found it hard to write down my opinions on Never Let Me Go because, after seeing it at a screening last night, I’m still not entirely sure what I think of it. What can clearly be said is that it’s a solid slice of British filmmaking that comes in a year stuffed full of excellent British films. The Kings Speech, Four Lions, Another Year and 127 Hours (if that counts) all feel instantly watchable and not overly morbid or exclusively British.

Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield were both excellent and clearly have big careers ahead of them, and the film was beautifully shot - its parallel Britain looking familiar yet distant. But, while the central relationships were intriguing and carried emotional punch, I took issue with the plot’s central construct. Essentially revolving around enslaved clones being treated like animals, it never felt believable or fully developed. Presumably designed to provoke ethical debate when applied to our own notions consumerism, the concept seemed all too literal in the film, whereas I expect the original novel (which I admittedly haven’t read) leaves more room to read between the lines.
