The Joneses is a film that provides an interesting critique of contemporary consumer society. It turns out that the titular family aren’t actually a family at all but a group put together by advertising execs to sell products to unsuspecting neighbours. It tackles the idea that advertising not only sells products but lifestyles and ideas of normalcy. This lifestyle becomes hard to maintain however, with the ‘perfect’ family becoming a dysfunctional one and neighbours suffering as a result of their presence.
Its a witty, entertaining and thoughtful film, and while it isn’t going to blow you away as a landmark in film-making it will provide you with food for thought.
