Classic Film Review: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is the film which kick started the career of Hayao Miyazaki - one of the great directors of animation. Essentially its story revolves around Princess Nausicaa’s attempts to protect her peaceful kingdom from an infected forest and from two rival states with grand plans. The animation itself is fantastic - full of colour, character and style - as is the thudding score which mixes of classical instruments with 80s synths. The only negative is that it’s a little overlong and sometimes feels stuffed full with too many ideas - both signs of an ambitious first-time director. Nevertheless, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind should still rightly be considered an animation classic.
