DVD Review: I finally caught up with Park Chan-wook’s Thirst (2009) last night which I remember gathering a lot of fans at its time of release. I didn’t know much about it before hand, other than it involved vampires and a priest, and what I got was a relatively enjoyable, if slightly muddled, black comedy… about vampires and a priest.
The central characters are engaging and their relationships are intriguing, but what the film struggled with was a consistent tone - at the start it seemed like a contemplative and subtle film was going play out slowly but by the end it was full of farce and physical humour. While I wouldn’t turn people away from seeing it, I’d suggest that it you haven’t seen Park’s Oldboy of Lady Vengeance, check those out first.
