Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables is a great guilty pleasure movie. Its the most manly film I’ve seen in a long time, with any emotion constrained to just one scene where Mickey Rourke’s character recalls regrets from his past as an action hero. Other than that it’s kick ass action and violence all the way. Some of the more brutal scenes of our supposed heroes essentially murdering ordinary South American soldiers can feel a bit jarring given that Hollywood has spent the last ten years largely focusing on extreme violence in which no-one actually dies.
Essentially a reprise of the Stallone/Schwarzenegger action films of the 80s, The Expendables is worth a watch if you remember those films fondly.
